Popular songs
“Born To Die,” “Blue Jeans (Remastered),” “Video Games (Remastered),” “Diet Mountain Dew,” “Million Dollar Man,” and “Summertime Sadness” are all tracks that are very well known for good reason. All the songs have beautiful vocals and a strong feeling of romance is present within them. Additionally, her lyricism acts very similar to poetry as every line within these songs flows together almost like a river.
When speaking to Calista Luis, a freshman at Colonia High School, she informed me of her favorite song on the album and why she favored it. “My favorite song on Lana Del Rey’s ‘Born To Die’ album is ‘Million Dollar Man. The instrumental aspect and the beat of the song is awing and sounds curious, which makes it catchy. Additionally, the song almost tells a story about how a man could be so flawless that it is destructive to one’s well being. The song highlights many broader topics such as the weight women carry if they marry a rich or successful man. Overall, this is one of my favorite songs on Del Rey’s album because of the rhythm and meaning,” said Luis.
Underrated songs
Some songs on “Born To Die” are not as popular as the others, but it does not mean they are not just as good. Songs like “Off To The Race,” “National Anthem,” “Dark Paradise,” ” Radio,” “Carmen,” and “This Is What Makes Us Girls.” All of these songs present Del Rey’s 1950s–1970s Americana vibe perfectly, especially “National Anthem.” Furthermore,”Carmen” and “This Is What Makes Us Girls,” are probably the least known tracks on the album. Despite the fact many of these songs are not as known, they still impact the album just as much. These tracks have such strong messages and themes that it is surprising that they are not more popular.
When speaking to Alexander Russo, a sophomore from Central Regional High School, he informed me that one of his favorite songs lingered within the category of more unknown songs. “Personally, I like the song ‘National Anthem’ on the album ‘Born To Die’ because of its unique lyricism. It also has an intricate word format in relation to how the song is composed. I really enjoy the representation of the 50s-60s vibe and style that is also featured in the music video. It gives a general different perspective on a lifetime that I and even she was not born in,” said Russo.
